Building a motivated language classroom through compelling, comprehensible input

This interactive, online workshop is aimed at secondary teachers of MFL.

This practical workshop will provide attendees with evidence-based strategies for the language acquisition classroom. The interactive approaches are rooted in research findings from both Self-Determination Theory, in terms of raising intrinsic motivation, and in the Comprehensible Input Theory, in terms of natural acquisition of language.

The webinar aims to provide attendees with classroom based, evidence-informed, strategies that will build enthusiastic engagement among language learners, leading to heightened intrinsic motivation for both the teacher and their students.

Participants will leave the session with an understanding of core language acquisition theory and how it applies to teaching and learning languages among young learners.

Attendees will also learn about Self-Determination Theory of intrinsic motivation and Dr. Printer will present an overview of key research findings relevant to language acquisition and motivation.

Participants will depart with a host of low-prep, easy to implement, classroom activities based on educational research that are proven to build motivation in the classroom.

A core focus of the workshop is the use of motivational strategies that are applicable in the busy secondary MFL classroom.

Participants will leave this workshop with a sound understanding of how Self-Determination Theory of intrinsic motivation can foster motivation and engagement, leading to natural acquisition of language structures in the MFL Classroom.

Participant will learn a host of low-prep, easy to implement classroom activities based on educational research that are proven to build motivation with MFL students.

Liam Printer hosts The Motivated Classroom podcast and is an Instructional Coach at the International School of Lausanne in Switzerland where he also teaches Spanish and English in the middle and high school. His podcast has been downloaded almost half a million times by MFL teachers, with hundreds of five star reviews and over 125 episodes to date. The podcast was listed in the Top 5% most downloaded podcasts across all industries and sectors in 2022.

His Doctorate in Education focused on motivation and teaching languages through storytelling and his research has been published in various peer reviewed journals. He has been invited as the Keynote speaker for a variety of international language teaching conferences.
