Key Learning Objectives

This webinar will enable you to:

  • Ensure you are up-to-date on the role of Head of Year and the key responsibilities
  • Evaluate how well the role is being fulfilled and identify improvements needed for outstanding provision
  • Improve how you lead and manage the pastoral team, year group and curriculum
  • Audit and improve your department systems, policies, and procedures
  • Share ambitious best practice across the whole school

Module One: Embedding Culture

Peter Drucker famously said that ‘culture eats strategy for breakfast’. This training focuses on strategies that enable us to embed the pastoral culture we want in our schools. The success of these strategies requires ‘buy in’ from all stakeholders. The first stage of securing this ‘buy in’ is to understand the current status of the school and explore how different stakeholders can have very different views regarding the behaviour and pastoral support in place. Common barriers are considered as we explore how to implement and embed change as a pastoral leader and how to ensure that team members are not overwhelmed but are actively motivated to be part of the transformation to an outstanding provision.

Module Two: Building Belonging and Sustainable Improvement

Every single day many thousands of pupils arrive at school craving a sense of belonging. We explore some of the research that reveals the science behind this need and discuss some effective ‘quick wins’ which can be employed immediately whilst the school culture changes longer term. Indeed, this module considers how you can generate opportunities for building belonging as part of sustainable improvement. Participants will have the opportunity to finish the session with actionable strategies that will have short- and long-term impact.
