Spontaneity and creativity in MFL at KS3-4

The development of spontaneous talk and creative writing has been at the heart of the National Curriculum and of the GCSE criteria for many years. However, under controlled assessment GCSEs, rote learning of over-prepared scripts sometimes became prioritised over genuine language mastery. This had a devastating effect on learner motivation and on transition to KS5.

In the context of the new MFL GCSEs, the development of spontaneity and creativity is now essential. In this one-day course, Martine will focus particularly on:

  • what spontaneity and creativity in the MFL curriculum actually mean
  • how to develop spontaneity and creativity throughout KS3-4
  • how to engage reluctant speakers
  • how to engage reluctant writers
  • how to reconcile the spontaneity/creativity agenda with the grammar/accuracy agenda
  • how to bridge the gap between grammar knowledge and creative grammar use
  • how to use listening as a springboard for better quality speaking – and writing

In her usual fashion, Martine will concentrate essentially on activity styles which:

  • demand little preparation
  • are easy to explain to students
  • are readily applicable to a variety of languages and topics
